WORLD UNDERSTANDING

DIST. 6110 NEWSLETTER
Having just returned from India, a country of cultural contrast, this month’s theme truly touches me. It has often been said: “we get, what we see, on the screens of our mind.”
DG 2007-08 Ellis Potter calls India “sensory overload”. It is what the US Peace Corps described as culture shock.
What connotation do you have when you see women on the sides of the road breaking large rocks with small sledge hammers into stones for the highway, for as little as $1.50 a day, then meeting a Rotary Foundation chair who thinks his District can raise one million dollars next year?
How do you understand smiling, beautiful people who greet you with folded hands, saying “namaste”, and wishing our spirits would be together and in peaceful harmony, with a teenage terrorist motivated by a gun, some ammunition, a GPS device, a little food, and promise of heaven?
Communication in the most perfect setting is still a challenge. What if you can’t speak the language? What can we as Rotarians communicate without words? Trust me, wearing Rotary caps and shirts, even the pin itself, will send multiple messages, and open a lot of doors on your behalf throughout the world.
The smiles of Rotarians reflect the Rotary spirit and the heart of the Rotarian and starts the process of World Understanding. What do you communicate, does your club communicate, to our wonderful world of Rotary?
What do you see on the screen of your mind for World Understanding? Others see it too.
